This is a guide to Ultherapy PRIME compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes' walk from Konkuk Univ. Station, Exit 1).
As the seasons change, many people become concerned about skin elasticity and look into ultrasound lifting. Elasticity is known to naturally decrease with aging due to a reduction in collagen and elastin in the skin. We have compiled frequently asked questions.
What exactly is HIFU?
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) refers to high-intensity focused ultrasound. Simply put, it is a lifting method that uses ultrasound energy. It works by focusing ultrasound energy on the SMAS layer with minimal damage to the skin surface, contracting and lifting sagging tissue.
Who is it suitable for?
The following cases are often reviewed during consultations:
- If skin sagging has begun due to decreased elasticity
- If you are concerned about nasolabial folds, wrinkles around the eyes, or neck wrinkles
- If you want to improve sagging cheeks or an uneven jawline
- If you are also considering V-line contouring
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure generally follows these steps:
- Anesthetic cream is applied as needed, and you wait for a certain period.
- After wiping off the cream, the treatment area is confirmed.
- A thin layer of ultrasound gel is applied to the area.
- HIFU is administered with a cartridge suitable for the skin depth and condition.
The depth, tip type, and number of shots are determined differently for each area depending on the skin condition.
Even with the same equipment, the treatment plan changes depending on the depth and type of tip used. The judgment of an experienced practitioner is an important part.

What changes can I expect?
It works by focusing ultrasound energy at a certain depth within the skin to strengthen the SMAS layer. Many people expect collagen regeneration, improved elasticity, reduction of fine wrinkles and double chin, and V-line contouring, but results and degree may vary from person to person.
What about pain and recovery?
Compared to incisional methods, the recovery burden is relatively low, and equipment with functions and safety approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is used. The procedure time is not long, so returning to daily life is reported to be relatively easy. Temporary pain, redness, or mild itching may occur, but these are often natural reactions.
What should I be careful about after the procedure?
It is advisable to refrain from hot saunas, strenuous exercise, and alcohol for a while, and it is best not to rub your face vigorously. Temporary reactions generally subside over time, but if symptoms different from usual persist, it is safer to seek medical attention.
Ultrasound lifting is a method considered for those who want to address elasticity without incisions. However, since the appropriate approach varies depending on your skin condition and degree of sagging, it is paramount to establish a plan after diagnosis.
If you wish to compare lifting procedures, you can also consider Sofwave or Thermage FLX.
