This is a guide to Botox compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).
Botox is commonly used to smooth wrinkles or reduce muscle volume, but explanations of how it works are rare. It is used not only for cosmetic purposes but also for various medical applications. In this article, we will explain the basic principles of how Botox works.
Main Ingredient of Botox
The main ingredient in Botox is a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin.
- It was initially known as a toxin that causes food poisoning.
- Later, it was discovered that diluted components could be beneficial in the cosmetic and medical fields.
Botulinum toxin is reported to be an ingredient approved by the U.S. FDA for cosmetic use.
Principle of Muscle Treatment
For muscles to contract, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine must act. Botox temporarily restricts muscle movement by inhibiting the action of acetylcholine.
- When injected into developed muscles, it works to reduce their volume.
- When injected into facial expression muscles, it works to alleviate wrinkles.

Scope of Application
| Application Area | Expected Effect |
|---|---|
| Square jaw | Reduction of developed masseter muscle volume |
| Forehead, glabella, periorbital area | Alleviation of expression wrinkles |
| Other | Medical uses such as hyperhidrosis |
This method is highly accessible due to its wide range of applications and short procedure time. The ingredient is injected with a fine needle, which generally results in less pain, and it is naturally absorbed by the body. However, individual experiences may vary.
Points to Note
Just because Botox is popular does not mean it should be approached carelessly. This is because the distribution of nerves, muscles, and fat varies across the face.
- A process of analyzing the size and extent of wrinkles to design the treatment is necessary.
- The dosage is determined by considering the degree of contraction of the developed muscles.
Using high doses indiscriminately is not always good, so it is safer to proceed at a clinic that analyzes your facial condition and plans systematically. The results and suitability may vary depending on the individual.
