This is a guide to Botox compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes' walk from Konkuk Univ. Station, Exit 1).
Botox is widely used for wrinkles and muscle concerns, but if you get it frequently, you may feel that "it's not like it used to be." This is related to resistance. In this article, we will explain how Botox works, why resistance develops, and the recommended injection interval.
How Botox Addresses Wrinkles
The main ingredient in Botox is a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. When this ingredient acts on nerve cells, the secretion of neurotransmitters is inhibited, temporarily relaxing muscles and reducing their size.
- Vertical frown lines are related to the contraction of muscles around the eyebrows.
- Temporarily relaxes muscles to lighten wrinkles.
- The effect is not permanent and recovers over time.
It is used for wrinkles caused by facial expression muscles, such as frown lines, and the duration and degree of the effect may vary from person to person.
Why Does Resistance Develop?
The problem with repeated treatments is the complex proteins included in the formulation. If our body's immune system recognizes these proteins as foreign substances, it produces neutralizing antibodies, which can lead to the development of resistance.
It is reported that if resistance develops, it may be difficult to expect the same effect as the first time, even with the same dose.

Reasons for Recommended Intervals
There is a reason why the industry recommends an interval of about 3 months. This period is known as the time when new nerve cells are formed next to inactive nerve cells and function restarts, so a resting period is considered necessary to reduce the immune response.
Purified Toxin as an Option
As an approach to reduce resistance, pure toxin formulations, which are purified from complex proteins that cause resistance, leaving only the active ingredient, are sometimes used. These formulations are considered for frequent treatments, and their suitability depends on the treatment history and purpose.
Conclusion
Botox is used for wrinkles caused by facial expression muscles, but resistance can develop with repeated use, so periodic management is important. It is recommended to determine the formulation and interval based on your treatment history.
