This is a guide to PicoSure tattoo removal compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes' walk from Konkuk Univ. Station, Exit 1).
We often hear people say they want to remove a tattoo but are putting it off because they're afraid of the pain. Let's explore the principles behind why tattoo removal can be painful, and how picosecond lasers can reduce that burden.
Why are tattoos so hard to remove?
Tattoos are created by making a wound in the skin and embedding dye deep in the dermis layer. The key is that it's not just a simple drawing.
The epidermis is a layer that sheds, but the dermis layer where the dye is embedded is a completely different tissue, so it won't fade even if you scrub it.
This permanence is a characteristic of tattoos, and at the same time, what makes them difficult to remove.
Why removal involves pain
The amount of pigment in a single tattoo is much greater than that of natural pigment lesions like melasma or moles. Therefore, higher output and more sessions are required.
- High pigment volume requires higher output.
- Higher output leads to greater skin irritation.
- Diverse colors may require multiple wavelengths.
For these reasons, removing colored tattoos is more challenging than black and white tattoos.
Two ways lasers treat dye
There are two main ways lasers are used to remove dye.
- Burning it off with thermal energy
- Breaking it down by vibration
Each has its pros and cons, so it's important to use them appropriately for the situation.

The difference a picosecond makes
PicoSure is characterized by reducing the irradiation time from nanoseconds to picoseconds, which is one-thousandth of a nanosecond.
- Less irritation to normal skin tissue at the same output.
- This helps reduce pain and irritation reactions.
- However, it is not completely painless, and individual differences may exist.
Especially in the final sessions, deeper pigments need to be treated, so some degree of pain must be tolerated.

Semi-permanent makeup is also possible
In addition to regular tattoos, it can also be used for the removal of semi-permanent makeup such as eyebrows or eyeliners. If you don't like the shape or want to change your look, you can consult us to confirm if it's possible.
Conclusion
Understanding the reasons for pain makes planning the treatment sessions much easier. Results may vary depending on the depth of the pigment and skin condition, so please check the condition of your tattoo first.
