Comparing HIFU And RF Lifting Methods

Lifting lasers are divided by principle into ultrasound and high-frequency. We have compared and summarized the operating methods for each type and the situations they are well-suited for.

This is a guide to Ultherapy PRIME compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).

Skin aging usually begins in the mid-20s, and with a decrease in elasticity, nasolabial folds and sagging cheeks appear. There are many types of lifting lasers, which can be confusing. We have compared and summarized the differences between ultrasonic and radiofrequency methods.

The Two Main Categories of Lifting Lasers

Lifting lasers are broadly divided into ultrasound (HIFU) and radiofrequency (RF). Both induce collagen regeneration with heat, but they differ in the depth and method of delivery.

CategoryMethodMain target area
Ultrasound HIFUForms thermal coagulation pointsDermis and SMAS layer
Radiofrequency RFDelivers uniform heatDermal layer contraction and collagen

Characteristics of Line-Type Ultrasound

The ultrasound method, which uses line-type cartridges, is characterized by its ability to deliver even energy to the desired area without gaps, and to quickly reach a wide area.

  • Used to refine sagging jowls and double chin
  • Also helps improve skin tone
  • Relatively short treatment time

The key to the ultrasonic method is to access not only the upper and lower dermis but also the deep SMAS layer.

Ask which is right for my sagging, ultrasound or radiofrequency

InMode, Based on Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency lifting, represented by InMode Former, aims to improve elasticity while addressing double chin and cheek fat. It is characterized by its approach in stages: fat management, dermal layer lifting, and epidermal tightening, aiming for multiple effects at once.

Another Ultrasonic Method

Among ultrasonic methods, there are devices that allow for various tips to be selected depending on the area, and can also be applied to the body. The principle is to deliver ultrasonic energy to the surface to form thermal coagulation points and induce collagen regeneration.

Radiofrequency Like Thermage

Thermage FLX is a method that uniformly delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the skin to contract the dermal layer and stimulate fibroblasts.

  • Used for sagging skin, wrinkles around the eyes, and neck wrinkles
  • Promotes dermal collagen synthesis
  • Also helps manage pores and facial redness

Conclusion

It is difficult to definitively say that one is better than the other. Skin type, degree of sagging, and depth of wrinkles all vary, and results may differ from person to person. Therefore, we recommend consulting after a visit to determine which method is right for you.
