This is an eye area treatment guide compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes' walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).

The most common comment we hear in the eye area consultation room is, "I just want to refine my eye area, but there are so many treatments that I don't know which one to get." The eye area is where changes appear most quickly on the face, and because of the proximity of the orbital structure, it can be burdensome to receive strong general treatments. Here's how we differentiate eye area treatments in the clinic.

1. Changes in the eye area are not just one thing

When you say "my eye area bothers me" in front of the mirror, you actually have one or more of the following:

  • Upper eyelid sagging. Double eyelids are covered, making the impression dull.
  • Eyebrow sagging. The eyebrow line drops, making the impression look stuffy.
  • Fine lines and dark circles under the eyes. Clear, fine lines and hollowness up close.
  • Eye area texture and dryness. Makeup doesn't apply well, and the impression is dry.
  • Milia and syringomas. Small, benign bumps often distributed around the eyes.

Each change requires a different tool recommended in the clinic.

2. Eye area sagging: Eye Thermage, Eye TenTherma, Tune Eye

If upper eyelid and eyebrow line sagging are your main concerns, RF-based eye-specific treatments are the primary candidates.

Eye Thermage FLX

Eye Thermage FLX is a monopolar RF treatment designed specifically for the eye area. 225 shots are distributed around the eyes to heat and rearrange dermal collagen.

Conditions recommended in the clinic:

  • Those whose upper eyelids are sagging, causing makeup to crease.
  • Those whose eyebrow lines are sagging, making their impression look stuffy.
  • Those receiving eye area treatment for the first time (a proven standard).
  • Those who desire regular care about once a year.

Eye TenTherma

Eye TenTherma is a 100-shot eye-specific TenTherma. It is in the same RF category as Eye Thermage but is an option with different intensity and shot count.

Tune Eye (Tune PeriOrbital)

Tune Eye is the eye-specific mode of the Tune series. It is a treatment that has redesigned the RF output and depth to suit the eye area and is operated as a standalone option for 270,000 won.

Conditions recommended in the clinic:

  • Those who have received Eye Thermage but want to refine the texture further.
  • Those who desire regular, gentle eye area RF care.
  • Those who are receiving the Tune series on their face and want to tidy up their eye area at the same time.

3. Fine lines and texture around the eyes: Eye Rejuran

Eye Rejuran is an eye-specific PDRN booster. It stimulates dermal regeneration to restore fine lines and texture.

Conditions recommended in the clinic:

  • Those with clear, fine lines.
  • Those with rough eye area texture where makeup flakes.
  • Those for whom eye cream shows slow changes and other treatments are burdensome.
  • Those who need almost no recovery downtime.

4. For those with high pain sensitivity: I-ravity Eye Area Focus

For those who are sensitive to pain and heat stimulation, the eye area focus protocol of I-ravity Lifting may be the answer. Since it is based on extracorporeal shockwave, there is less heat damage and almost no recovery downtime.

Conditions recommended in the clinic:

  • Those who find other eye area treatments burdensome due to pain.
  • Those who absolutely cannot have downtime due to their clinical schedule.
  • Those who want to accumulate care frequently with gentle intensity.

5. At-a-glance comparison

ToolMain TargetIntensityRecommended CycleRecovery
Eye Thermage FLX (225 shots)Sagging, dermal heatingMedium-strongOnce a yearImmediate return to daily life
Eye TenTherma (100 shots)Sagging, gentle RFGentleOnce every 6-12 monthsImmediate return to daily life
Tune EyeTexture, elasticity, contourMediumOnce every 3-6 monthsImmediate return to daily life
Eye Rejuran (PDRN)Fine line, texture recoveryGentleOnce every 4-6 weeksPossible mild bruising
I-ravity Eye AreaPain-free cumulative careVery gentleOnce every 3-4 weeksImmediate return to daily life

Even within the same category of "eye area treatments," each tool has a different role.

6. Milia and syringomas around the eyes: Separate tools

Milia and syringomas, which are often distributed around the eyes, are not in the RF or booster category but in the CO2 laser category.

  • Milia. Keratin granules within the epidermis. Epidermal incision followed by content removal.
  • Syringomas. Small tumors distributed deep within the dermis. Progressed in stages.

For more details, please refer to the Guide to Moles, Age Spots, Skin Tags, and Milia.

The eye area is a region where the intensity, depth, and frequency of treatment must be very delicate due to the proximity of the orbital structure. The intensity applied to other areas is not directly applied to the eye area, and the orbital structure and skin thickness are checked directly before the main treatment.

7. Common confusions often brought up in the clinic

Q1. "Isn't eye cream enough?" Eye cream helps with epidermal hydration and antioxidant effects, but it is difficult for it to replace treatments that act on the dermal layer. Sagging, fine lines, and hollowness are changes in dermal collagen and structure, so changes are slow with topical agents alone.

Q2. "Will dark circles disappear if I get eye area treatment?" Dark circles have various causes.

  • Vascular (bluish). Thin skin, visible blood vessels.
  • Pigmented (brownish). Melanin deposition.
  • Shadow (hollowness). Shadows caused by hollowness under the eyes.

The appropriate tool differs depending on the cause. We first identify the cause with a Wood's lamp in the clinic.

Q3. "I want to address all changes at once." If you try to address all changes in the eye area at once, stimulation can accumulate, increasing the risk of side effects. Accumulating one tool at a time, step by step, is recommended.

Q4. "Can't I just fill it with filler?" There are cases where filler is carefully injected into the hollow area under the eyes with a soft product. However, the under-eye area carries a high risk of side effects and can easily look unnatural, so a very careful pre-evaluation is conducted in the clinic.

8. Post-treatment care

Common for eye area treatments:

  • Avoid strong massage or rubbing of the treated area.
  • Temporary mild swelling and redness will gradually improve.
  • Diligent sun protection (to prevent pigmentation in the eye area).
  • Avoid contact lenses on the day of treatment (depending on the type of treatment).
  • Avoid saunas, swimming, and strenuous exercise for one week.

In particular, sun protection is the most important management for eye area results and stability. Sunglasses with UV protection certification are more helpful than colored sunglasses.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I'm getting treatment for the first time, which tool should I start with? It depends on the area that bothers you most. If it's sagging, Eye Thermage; if it's fine lines, Eye Rejuran; if it's texture, Tune Eye is the primary candidate.

Q. Can I wear makeup after the treatment? It is best to avoid it on the day of the treatment, but you can proceed as usual from the next day. If makeup is necessary on the day of treatment, the clinic will provide guidance.

Q. Can I receive eye area treatment and full-face treatment together? It is common to receive Thermage FLX + Eye Thermage, or TuneFace + Tune Eye together within the same treatment session. Dividing areas within the same RF category is common.

The eye area is the most delicate part of the face to treat. Instead of trying to address all changes at once, it is recommended in the clinic to choose a tool for one specific concern and gradually accumulate treatments. You can inquire directly via chat for a non-face-to-face consultation.
