This is a guide to GentleMax Pro Plus hair removal compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).
Laser hair removal reduces body hair with each session, making management much easier. However, if pre- and post-treatment precautions are not followed, it can lead to irritation or hyperpigmentation. This article summarizes frequently asked precautions before and after hair removal.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal works by reacting to melanin pigment.
The principle is to selectively act on the black melanin pigment in hair roots and hair follicle cells to remove body hair.
- It is usually performed 5 or more times at 4-8 week intervals.
- It can be performed on most areas, including the philtrum, chin, hairline, arms, armpits, and calves.
- Results may vary depending on the area and hair condition.
Do not pluck hair before the procedure.
This is the most frequently asked precaution.
- If you pluck hair beforehand, the hair follicles that the laser would react to will disappear.
- It is best to avoid waxing or plucking with tweezers before the procedure.
- It is appropriate to trim the length only by shaving.
Please calm any inflammation beforehand.
If there are any skin troubles in the treatment area, manage them first.
- If you have acne or skin troubles, they may worsen due to irritation.
- It is best to proceed after the inflammation has subsided.
- The schedule may be postponed depending on the condition.
If you are wondering if your skin condition is suitable for the procedure, please check by consulting before hair removal.
Avoid tanning.
Skin tone affects the laser's reaction.
- Tanning darkens the skin, which can disperse energy and increase irritation.
- This can lead to hyperpigmentation.
- If your skin is naturally dark or dry, proceed after consultation.
Please inform us about medications and your constitution beforehand.
There is information you must share during the consultation.
- If you are taking any medications, please inform us in advance.
- If you have a keloid constitution, please inform us beforehand.
- It is safer to proceed after a detailed consultation.
Post-procedure care
It is recommended to follow these guidelines after the procedure.
- Do not touch the treated area.
- Apply moisturizer and sunscreen thoroughly.
- Avoid saunas, jjimjilbangs (Korean bathhouses), and swimming pools for 2-3 days.
Immediately after the procedure, residual heat may remain, raising concerns about folliculitis. Therefore, it is recommended to check the skin's stable condition after 2-3 days before using such facilities. It is also advisable to refrain from alcohol and smoking as much as possible.
As the sessions progress, hair reduction makes management easier, but the degree varies from person to person. If you are curious about the appropriate number of sessions and care for your area, please feel free to inquire by asking about my hair removal schedule.
