This is an extraction guide compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).
As I was putting on makeup, I started noticing small, bumpy milia on my face. They were larger than moles, and even covering them with concealer only made my makeup look thicker without improving the situation. Before trying to deal with them myself, I decided to find out what they were.
Why do milia form?
Milia refer to hardened sebum or waste products accumulated in the skin's pores. The exact cause is not clear, but they are said to appear frequently on thin skin. They can also appear in the following cases:
- When dead skin cells, such as sebum and waste products, accumulate
- After skin damage from lasers, burns, or atopic dermatitis
- Long-term use of ointments or certain cosmetic ingredients
They mainly appear around the eyes but can also form on the face or body, appearing as white or yellowish spherical shapes.

What is the difference between milia and syringomas?
The two looked similar, making differentiation difficult. The differences I compiled after consultation were as follows:
| Category | Milia | Syringomas |
|---|---|---|
| Background | Hardened sebum/waste products | Proliferation of sweat ducts |
| Appearance | White/yellow spherical shape | Sesame seed-like appearance |
| Tendency | Various ages/areas | Women after puberty, genetic influence |
Even if their sizes are similar, their backgrounds are different, so it was important to identify what they were first and approach them with appropriate methods for each.

Reasons why you shouldn't try to extract them yourself
They were small and looked like they could be popped, so I had tried it before, but I had an experience where scars were left due to improper care. Incorrect extraction can irritate even normal skin, causing bleeding and wounds. If handled in an unsanitary environment, it can lead to bacterial infection, inflammation, or other problems, so it was important to have them handled in a place that maintains strict hygiene.
If you're unsure whether your bumps are milia or syringomas, inquire first via chat consultation.
Removal methods and prevention
There were methods for extraction and methods for laser care. I was able to receive systematic guidance not only on quick extraction but also on prevention methods afterward. I learned that clean cleansing is important because dead skin cells can accumulate again, and that maintaining moist hydration is helpful because dry skin is more prone to dead skin cell formation.
Different approaches depending on location and size
The location and size of milia varied from person to person. It was reassuring to have them handled according to their location and size after confirmation. If milia-like bumps are hindering a smooth skin appearance, I felt it was better to get a diagnosis first rather than trying to deal with them through self-judgment.
If you're concerned about milia around your eyes, check via chat consultation before trying to deal with them yourself. If syringomas are suspected, you can also consider Agnes for syringomas, and if moles or age spots are present, CO2 laser for moles/age spots.
