As more people get tattoos, many are now considering removal due to changes in their professional environment or the meaning of their tattoos. Fortunately, removal methods have changed significantly from the past. This article compares and summarizes how old removal methods differ from current pico laser methods.

Why Tattoos Are Difficult to Remove

Tattoo ink is located deep in the dermis layer, just below the epidermis.

  • Even if dead skin cells shed, the ink in the dermis maintains its form.
  • Therefore, it is difficult for pigmentation to lighten with simple surface care alone.
  • The wider and darker the area, the more challenging it is.

Past Removal Methods

Before lasers became common, physical and chemical methods were primarily used.

These methods involved carefully and laboriously scraping away skin tissue while minimizing damage, or burning it with electrical devices or chemicals.

The complex process came with a significant burden and the risk of scarring.

Current Laser Methods

Currently, methods that use laser energy to break down or vibrate and remove ink are used.

  • Pigments are selectively targeted and broken down.
  • The risk of scarring is reported to be reduced compared to the past.
  • However, pain may vary depending on the laser intensity setting.

Why Pico Laser?

Even with lasers of the same type, performance differences can lead to different results.

ItemPast MethodsPico Laser
Principle of actionScraping or burningFinely breaks down pigment
Single shot durationRelatively longVery short
Surrounding skin irritationRelatively highRelatively low

Pico lasers are reported to have a very short single shot duration, which results in relatively less irritation to surrounding skin at the same intensity.

Why Multiple Sessions Are Needed

Removal is usually not completed in one session but over several.

  1. The number of sessions is divided to reduce skin irritation and burden.
  2. The laser is applied in stages, observing the depth and amount of pigment.
  3. The next session is determined after checking the recovery status.

Factors Affecting Removal Duration

The total duration is difficult to specify in a single statement.

  • The wider the tattoo, the more time is needed.
  • Color tattoos are more challenging.
  • Sensitive areas are treated with greater caution.

Also Used for Semi-Permanent Makeup

Semi-permanent makeup such as eyebrows and eyeliners can also be considered for removal using the same principle. This is utilized when styles have changed or when the makeup feels unnatural. For more details, please refer to PicoSure semi-permanent tattoo removal.

Rather than delaying removal, it is better to calmly explore methods suitable for your pigment condition. Since the appropriate approach varies depending on the area and color, please feel free to inquire with Ask about my tattoo removal plan.
