This is a guide to Ultherapy PRIME compiled by Dr. Choi Byeong-geun of SHINE U Clinic Konkuk (3 minutes walk from Konkuk Univ. Station Exit 1).

When you start to worry about sagging cheeks and nasolabial folds, you look for a lifting treatment that won't look unnatural. Ultherapy often appears in searches. I've compiled a list of common questions people have before getting the treatment.

How does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy is a portmanteau of "Ultrasound" and "Therapy," and it is a non-invasive lifting treatment that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). It is performed without surgical incision and is a device recognized for its efficacy and safety by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is recommended to check if the device is genuine before proceeding.

The fact that it's a non-invasive method without incisions greatly reduced my burden.

What depths does it treat?

With micro-ultrasound, it was possible to treat from the shallow to the deep layers of the skin, adjusting to the desired depth. It can treat various depths of 1.5mm, 3.0mm, and 4.5mm, allowing it to target not only the surface layer but also the deep basal layer. As it is a non-invasive method, it could be adjusted according to individual skin type and skin layer.

What does it mean to treat with precision?

A feature of Ultherapy is its DeepSee technology. This method uses ultrasound imaging to view the dermis, fat, fibrous septa, and muscles in real-time during the procedure. Because the treatment area is directly confirmed while applying the ultrasound, not a single shot is wasted, allowing for precise and safe access to the desired area.

If you're curious about the right depth for your skin, inquire first via chat consultation.

What about pain and anesthesia?

Ultherapy tends to have noticeable results, which often comes with some pain, but the sensation can vary depending on one's condition. Applying anesthetic cream and allowing ample time for it to take effect can help reduce pain.

  • Apply anesthetic cream and request wrapping.
  • Wait sufficiently for about 30 minutes before proceeding.
  • Sedation anesthesia is also available if needed.

Wrapping helped the anesthetic cream absorb better, which aided in numbing the sensation. However, the degree of sensation can vary from person to person.

What should I be careful about after the treatment?

After the procedure, there may be redness, a tingling sensation, and slight swelling, which also varies from person to person. To aid recovery, I paid attention to the following:

  • Temporarily avoid saunas or strenuous exercise that cause excessive sweating.
  • Apply plenty of moisturizing cream to maintain hydration.
  • Use a mask pack for soothing.

If you want to check for changes, taking before-and-after photos from the same angle was helpful.

How long do the results last?

As the SMAS layer contracts, sagging areas lift, and collagen regenerates, the lifting effect is said to continue for approximately 6 months. After one treatment, the results can last for up to about a year before gradually diminishing. However, the cycle and results can vary for each person depending on skin condition, fat thickness, and facial structure.

If you're curious about the right treatment cycle for your facial structure, check via chat consultation. You can also compare it with Sofwave lifting, which treats different depths, or Thermage FLX, which is a high-frequency lifting treatment.
